FAQ

ABOUT THE PRODUCT

What is the RSD Configurable Rack System?

The RSD is a modular, hitch-mounted bike rack that you configure to your exact needs before it ships. Choose your rack size (2, 4, 5, 6, or 8 bikes), mix and match cradle types (Standard Wheel, XL Wheel, and OTB Handlebar), pick your color (Desert Sage or River Bed), and select your hitch length (Short, Standard, or XL). Everything is included in the price — no hidden add-ons.

What hitch receiver do I need?

A 2-inch Class III or higher receiver hitch with a minimum tongue weight capacity of 500 lbs. This is the standard full-size hitch found on most trucks, SUVs, and vans. We do not recommend using a 1¼" receiver, even with an adapter — the weight loads and leverage forces involved with a loaded bike rack exceed what 1¼" receivers are designed for. Every vehicle is different, so please verify your vehicle's specific hitch capacity to ensure it can safely support the weight of the rack and bikes. When in doubt, check your vehicle's owner's manual or the sticker on your hitch.

What's the weight capacity?

80 lbs per cradle position, with a total bike weight capacity of 250 lbs. For loads over 250 lbs, add the Stabilizer Straps and Anchors Kit (sold separately) to increase total capacity to 350 lbs. The stabilizer straps and threaded hitch pin also reduce sway at highway speeds and are strongly recommended when carrying heavy loads.

How much does the rack weigh?

Approximate weights by model (varies slightly based on hitch length and cradle selection):

RSD2: ~50 lbs

RSD4: ~70 lbs

RSD5: ~80 lbs

RSD6: ~90 lbs

RSD8: ~100 lbs

What's the maximum tire size the cradles can hold?

Standard Wheel Cradle: Fits up to 29" × 3.0" tires. This is the default cradle and handles most mountain bikes, road bikes, and gravel bikes.

XL Wheel Cradle: Fits up to 26" × 5.0" or 27.5" × 4.5" tires. Designed for fat bikes.

OTB Handlebar Cradle: No tire width limit — the bike hangs by the handlebars, so tire size doesn't matter. This is the go-to for anything that doesn't fit a wheel cradle.

You can start with standard cradles and add XL or OTB cradles later, or configure your exact mix at purchase.

What's the smallest bike or tire it can carry?

Standard wheel cradles fit tires down to 24" with no adapter. Smaller tires are possible, but the frame may contact the cradle. For kids' bikes or BMX bikes, the OTB Handlebar Cradle is the better option — it holds the bike by the handlebars and accommodates virtually any wheel size.

What is the OTB Handlebar Cradle and when should I use it?

The OTB (Over-The-Bar) Handlebar Cradle holds your bike by the handlebars instead of the wheels — two padded arms cradle the bar and the bike hangs vertically. Tire size doesn't matter, so it's the go-to for smaller bikes that don't fit a standard wheel cradle. OTB cradles must be mounted to the left of all Standard and XL cradles to avoid interference between bikes, and each model has a maximum:

RSD2: 1 OTB max

RSD4: 2 OTB max

RSD5: 2 OTB max

RSD6: 3 OTB max

RSD8: 4 OTB max

The configurator shows you exactly which positions support OTB cradles and enforces these limits automatically as you build.

Can I mix different cradle types on the same rack?

Yes — that's the whole idea. You can combine Standard Wheel, XL Wheel, and OTB Handlebar cradles in any configuration that fits your rack. Going on a trip with all adult bikes? All Standard cradles. Weekend with the kids? Add some Handlebar cradles. You configure it when you order, and you can purchase additional cradles to swap later — in about 10 minutes.

Can the rack handle e-bikes?

Absolutely. At 80 lbs per bike — and tested well beyond that — e-bikes are well within the RSD's capability. If your e-bike has wider tires, just spec an XL Wheel Cradle for that position. We recommend using Stabilizer Straps when hauling heavier e-bikes for extra security.

Does it have a hitch lock or bike lock?

Every rack includes a stabilizer clamp. The threaded locking hitch pin and the cable lock set are available as optional accessories. Our lock and stabilizer designs are simpler and less expensive to replace than integrated systems — so if you lose or break something on the trail, it's a quick, easy fix.

Do your racks have a hydraulic or lift-assist system?

Not currently, and that's intentional. Traditional hydraulic systems can help lower a full rack, but they actually add resistance when lifting a loaded rack back upright. They also tend to wear out around the same time as their 2 year warranty — which, in our experience, is a real pain to deal with. We went with a straightforward foot-activated tilt latch that keeps both hands free and requires no maintenance.

Can I use my rack on a travel trailer?

The RSD2, RSD4, RSD5 and RSD6 can be used on travel trailers when paired with Stabilizer Straps. The RSD8 hasn't been fully tested behind trailers, so we don't recommend it at this time. Always confirm your hitch and receiver are rated for your intended load.

Will it work on a Sprinter van?

Yes. The XL hitch option provides enough clearance to open rear doors on Sprinter, Transit, ProMaster, and similar vans with the rack installed — without any extra adapter. The Standard hitch allows for rear van doors to be partially opened — often enough to load and unload items that aren't oversized.

Can I buy replacement parts or individual components?

Yes. Cradles (Standard, XL, and OTB), crossbar sets, and other components are all available for individual purchase. This is part of the modular design — if you need a new cradle type, or want to add crossbars, you can order exactly what you need without replacing the whole rack.

What tools do I need for assembly?

Standard tools that most people already have or can pick up at any hardware store:

3/4" wrench or socket

1/2" wrench or socket

T55 Torx bit (or 5/16" / 8mm hex as a substitute)

No specialty tools required.

*Always review the assembly guide for your specific rack for the most accurate and up-to-date information.

How long does assembly take?

First-time assembly out of the box typically takes 30–60 minutes following the included guide. After that, mounting and removing the rack from your vehicle takes just a few minutes once you're familiar with the system.

Can one person install it?

It's possible, but we recommend having a second person help — especially for the larger models (RSD6, RSD8). The rack itself weighs 50–100 lbs depending on the model, and can be quite large — an extra pair of hands can be really helpful.
